CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It’s a program that was developed in Japan by a group of mothers who were concerned about the quality, freshness and nutritional benefits of the food that was available in their local area. They partnered with a local farmer who grew healthy, seasonal food especially for them in exchange for a commitment that they would each buy a weekly share. Payment was made in advance to enable the farmer to purchase the seeds, compost and equipment needed to grow the food at the start of the season. It was a mutually beneficial relationship that has been replicated time and time again all over the world. CSA programs have become a popular choice for communities wanting to localise their own food systems and connect personally and directly with where their food comes from.
A weekly share contains between 7 and 10 different vegetables and herbs, depending on the season. Summer boxes are full of tomatoes, basil, garlic, zucchini, eggplants and cucumbers. In Autumn or winter you might receive kale, carrots, coriander, spring onions, lettuce or beetroot. For a full list of the vegetables we have planned for you this season, please contact us. Because growing vegetables depends on the weather, pest pressure and many other variables, we can’t predict exactly how each crop will perform. That’s just a part of belonging to a CSA program. Customers often say they enjoy the surprise each week of finding out what is available on the farm. Rest assured that you will always receive a colourful variety of fresh and delicious vegetables and herbs each week.
You can opt for a weekly or fortnightly subscription, the frequency is up to you. If you would like to arrange a different frequency, that’s fine too, just contact us directly and we’ll set it up for you.
Absolutely! You will be able to specify that this subscription is a gift during checkout. You will be asked to provide your details as purchaser, and the delivery information separately.
No, our subscription service applies only to the CSA box program. If you would like a custom box of vegetables, just go to the Farm Gate page and order exactly which vegetables you would like to receive. Orders from our Farm Gate are one-offs sales and are not on a subscription basis. This is because different vegetables are in season at different times and the Farm Gate page is updated each week to reflect only what is being harvested at the time.
Yes, we offer delivery in the Westbury/Deloraine/Hagley area on Mondays (except public holidays). Westbury township deliveries are free, while deliveries to Hagley or Deloraine will incur a fee of $8.
Yes! We proudly grow 100% of our plants and produce ourselves, right here in Westbury. That includes everything in our nursery, farm gate shop and our CSA veggie boxes. Everything is locally propagated, grown, harvested and packed on our small-scale urban farm. We even source local compost and recycled pots.
