about us
Hello fellow veggie lover!
My name is Leah, I’m the green thumb behind all the lovely, planty things in this shop. The Great Green is an edible nursery and small-scale market garden in Westbury, lutruwita/Tasmania. Together with my family, collie dog and farm helpers, I have the privilege of growing edible nursery plants and delicious fresh produce for our community here in the Meander Valley. We love the process of growing and eating local, organic produce, and we love sharing the experience with fellow gardeners and eaters. The goal of our business is to give you a friendly, affordable, 100% locally grown source for all your edible plant needs.
We do the work we do because we care about the impact our highly globalised food system is having on our planet, and we want to be personally involved in the solution. Eating food you grow yourself and/or eating food bought directly from your local farmer is good for our precious planet, for our communities and for ourselves. The Great Green is here to help localise our community’s food sources. To achieve this, we pack our veggie boxes full of seasonal, organic (non-certified) food, picked at its peak from healthy local soil, and given to you without being sprayed, stored, artificially ripened or transported long distances. Our nursery provides 100% locally grown, edible plant types and varieties which are adapted to grow well in our Tasmanian climate and are ready to thrive in your own food garden.
In the market garden, our farming methods and principles put soil health and biodiversity first. We use organic methods such as minimal-till bed prep, compost and cover crops to improve soil fertility and structure, natural pest control such as companion planting, rotation and netting, and weed control measures such as tarping, flame weeding and mulching. In the nursery we use recycled pots, locally produced potting mix and (as far as possible) Tasmanian-grown seed and mother stock.
